One for the Romance Readers: Ghostly Interference

Hi Everyone,

I don’t typically read books from the romance genre, but part of becoming a better writer is to be an open-minded reader.  It felt disingenuous to recommend a book that I hadn’t read, so I didn’t hesitate to give Jan Sikes’s latest novel a chance.  I’m three-fourths of the way done now, but I was hooked right from the start. 

Imagine growing up in an unstable foster care situation and losing your brother, the one person who has had your back throughout your life.  That’s the situation that fiery Rena Jett finds herself in when Jag Peters comes into her life.  What starts as an unlikely pair grows into a full romance, but not without many challenges along the way.  Rena and Jag learn their secrets can test the ability to trust each other and their loved ones.

BUYING A CELL PHONE IN 2001

Ghostly Interference is set in 2001. Cell phones were around, but brands and styles were limited. My character, Rena Jett, had no reason to have a phone after her brother was deployed to Afghanistan. With no family or friends, she saw no need for one. That was until she found herself in a relationship with Jag Peters. 

So, she decided she needed to make a purchase. Thinking back to 2001, I remembered that Blackberry phones were the hottest thing going. Remember them? Big and awkward with tiny little keys to type on. 🙂

Excerpt:

Jag had said he’d meet her at 4:00 and that wasn’t far away. She had a mission that had been on her mind all day. She needed a phone. She’d asked various customers for their recommendations, and so far, everyone seemed to be sold on the new Blackberry. 

The thought of calling Jag every night before she turned out the lights made her heart race. Could this be what falling in love felt like? If so, she just might learn to like it. 

Life held promise. Something she hadn’t felt since Sam went away. Even then, the promise of his return had kept her going until…until he didn’t come back, except in a body bag. 

At four, she untied her apron and clocked out. She waved to Corky and the waitress coming in to relieve her and rushed out the door. 

“Where are you headed in such a hurry, Rena Jett?” Jag lazily leaned against his car parked next to Candy Kicker. 

Rena flashed a grin. “I’m headed to see my new boyfriend.”

“Oh? Do I know him?” Jag teased.

She stepped into his arms and lay her cheek on his chest. “You just might. If not, I’ll introduce you.” She raised her face to meet his waiting lips.

She sank into the kiss and struggled to find breath. Yes, if this is what falling in love is like, she could learn to like it. What if she got hurt? It wouldn’t be the first time.

Once she broke the kiss and pulled back, Jag said. “I don’t have anything planned. I just want to be with you. I’ve thought about you all day.”

“Well, I have a plan and you can come with me if you’d like.” 

“I’d like. Where to?”

“I don’t have a phone and I need one.”

Jag nodded. “Yes, you do, and it just so happens that I know a thing or two about them.”

“I had one until Sam left.”

“Then let’s go get you one.”

What about you? What was your first cell phone? The first one I had was a Trac Phone. I’m not sure they even still have those. My, how things have changed!
