One for the Romance Readers: Ghostly Interference

Hi Everyone,

I don’t typically read books from the romance genre, but part of becoming a better writer is to be an open-minded reader.  It felt disingenuous to recommend a book that I hadn’t read, so I didn’t hesitate to give Jan Sikes’s latest novel a chance.  I’m three-fourths of the way done now, but I was hooked right from the start.

Imagine growing up in an unstable foster care situation and losing your brother, the one person who has had your back throughout your life.  That’s the situation that fiery Rena Jett finds herself in when Jag Peters comes into her life.  What starts as an unlikely pair grows into a full romance, but not without many challenges along the way.  Rena and Jag learn their secrets can test the ability to trust each other and their loved ones.

It is my pleasure to introduce Jan Sikes and her new novel, Ghostly Interference, to my readers.

Thanks,

Pete

BUYING A CELL PHONE IN 2001

Ghostly Interference is set in 2001. Cell phones were around, but brands and styles were limited. My character, Rena Jett, had no reason to have a phone after her brother was deployed to Afghanistan. With no family or friends, she saw no need for one. That was until she found herself in a relationship with Jag Peters.

So, she decided she needed to make a purchase. Thinking back to 2001, I remembered that Blackberry phones were the hottest thing going. Remember them? Big and awkward with tiny little keys to type on. 🙂

Excerpt:

Jag had said he’d meet her at 4:00 and that wasn’t far away. She had a mission that had been on her mind all day. She needed a phone. She’d asked various customers for their recommendations, and so far, everyone seemed to be sold on the new Blackberry.

The thought of calling Jag every night before she turned out the lights made her heart race. Could this be what falling in love felt like? If so, she just might learn to like it.

Life held promise. Something she hadn’t felt since Sam went away. Even then, the promise of his return had kept her going until…until he didn’t come back, except in a body bag.

At four, she untied her apron and clocked out. She waved to Corky and the waitress coming in to relieve her and rushed out the door.

“Where are you headed in such a hurry, Rena Jett?” Jag lazily leaned against his car parked next to Candy Kicker.

Rena flashed a grin. “I’m headed to see my new boyfriend.”

“Oh? Do I know him?” Jag teased.

She stepped into his arms and lay her cheek on his chest. “You just might. If not, I’ll introduce you.” She raised her face to meet his waiting lips.

She sank into the kiss and struggled to find breath. Yes, if this is what falling in love is like, she could learn to like it. What if she got hurt? It wouldn’t be the first time.

Once she broke the kiss and pulled back, Jag said. “I don’t have anything planned. I just want to be with you. I’ve thought about you all day.”

“Well, I have a plan and you can come with me if you’d like.”

“I’d like. Where to?”

“I don’t have a phone and I need one.”

Jag nodded. “Yes, you do, and it just so happens that I know a thing or two about them.”

“I had one until Sam left.”

“Then let’s go get you one.”

***

What about you? What was your first cell phone? The first one I had was a Trac Phone. I’m not sure they even still have those. My, how things have changed!

BOOK BLURB:

Jag Peters has one goal in his quiet comfortable life—to keep his karma slate wiped clean. A near-miss crash with a candy apple red Harley threatens to upend his safe world. He tracks down the rider to apologize properly. Slipping into a seedy biker bar, he discovers the rider isn’t a “he”, it’s a “she”, a dark-haired beauty.

Rena Jett is a troubled soul, who lives in a rough world. She wants no part of Jag’s apology, but even while she pushes him away, she is attracted to him. When he claims to see a ghost—her brother—can she trust him? And could her brother’s final gift, a magical rune stone with the symbol for “happily ever after” have the power to heal her wounds and allow opposites to find common ground—perhaps even love?

Yes, Jan’s book was great. I shared my review above (right below Sally’s first comment.) Sorry about Facebook jail. Maybe they should start offering you frequent flier miles.😊

      1. Thanks Pete. I came back and took a double look. And LOL, no kidding. I should have a ton of FF points from FB. Usually 24 hours, but I must have been tragic to get a one week suspension! I’ll share why eventually in a blog when I return from my blog break 🙂

  2. Great showcase for the book Pete and sounds like another fantastic book from Jan.. I only got rid of my flip phone last year as I only ever texted on it. Now I have got quite attached to my smart phone but still only make the odd call or send a text, but have branched out to take photos… x

With all of the bells and whistles that come with phones these days, it’s no wonder that people spend so much time on them. My favorite use is still the most basic—to check in with others and see how they’re doing.

  3. You remind me, Pete, how since I have started blogging I am reading more diverse genres of books. I am often pleasantly surprised by these books. “Ghostly Interference” sounds intriguing. Now on my reading list. Thank you, Pete, for the review and the introduction.

I think most of us have our sweet spots when it comes to what we like to read. I like mysteries with lots of layers, but lately, I’ve been reading more biographies. On the other hand, I’m always curious about what others are reading, and I like to try and be open-minded enough to try new things.

I do think it’s helpful. I’m finally nearing the end of my first middle-grade novel. It’s a little long (60,000 words), but it gets a little better each time. The end still feels a bit rushed, and I’ll keep working on it until it’s tighter. The plan is to give it a year when I start putting it out there. I’ll probably self-publish after that if I can’t find any takers. The main thing is I’m still learning and having fun.

      1. It sounds like you have a good plan and are on top of things. The book does sound long at 60,000 words. And, please follow your instincts; if the end feels rushed, it probably is. I was never happy with the opening paragraph of my book, even though others loved it. I had a lightbulb moment to scrap it altogether and jump to the chase. So much better!! I’m glad I followed my instincts. I imagine your writing group is helpful. Do you all meet on Zoom? Learning and having fun is what it’s all about. Happy New Year!

I feel like this year shouldn’t even count as everything is different. For me, I have never walked so many damn miles in my life (It’s my way of coping). I don’t chart these things, but I’ll bet I’ve read more books this year than any previous year. Can you imagine what our phones will be able to do in ten years?

Yes back in March and April I was devouring books and even had a goal of reading 52 books in 52 weeks but it makes me laugh now because I got to about 25 books and hit a wall, I call it the lockdown wall! I got my first phone while in college, if memory serves me correctly. It was a brick, and I believe the brand started with an M (Motorola, maybe???). It was a flip phone, and I was so happy to have it because it allowed me to stay out later without my mom worrying about me. Lol!

I love how you captured the butterflies of a new relationship, Jan. 😊

Yes, we’ve come a long way in just a few decades. It’s mind-blowing how attached we’ve become to our phones. We have to take the good with the bad when it comes to technology. It’s nice to have all that information right at our fingertips, but I feel sad when I see families out for dinner all engaged with their phones instead of each other.

Your book, The Player, is one of the first romance books I ever read, Jacquie.😊 You guys may turn me into a convert yet.

One of the best ways to improve my writing is to read lots of different writers, even if it’s not in my usual genre. I don’t know if I’ll ever write steamy love scenes, but Jan’s book has got plenty of those.

Much luck to you with your latest project, Robbie.
